Care and Feeding of your Foulard for the Floating Ball routine
By Nothing Can Topit
• Size matters! Tailoring of your foulard is important. Select your foulard based on your height.
5’4” and shorter: 22” foulard
5’5”-5’11”: 26”-28” foulard, based on arm length, may go longer or shorter
6’: 30”+ foulard
• Color Choices: In general, a dark solid color is preferable, but one needs a contrasting color to an all-black ensemble, or the Magician’s head becomes the ball through black art. Another option is to place white trim along the edge of your foulard. Match the color of the foulard to other silks in the act so there is a cohesive color scheme.
• Transparency: Your foulard is made from two layers of fabric, blocking light. Check against bright light to see if the outer fabric is transparent. The foulard can be lined in black or interlined to prevent transparency.
• Flow: the soft satin of the foulard adds to the drama and swirl of the act. A bead sewn on the corners helps the magician feel where the foulard is moving through space, as well as being easier to grip the corners.
• Distractions: Performers should avoid low cut tops when performing the zombie, as the additional light orbs reflecting off skin are distracting. Wear the low-cut tops after the show.
• Avoid wrinkles by wrapping your foulard around a long wand or tube during storage. Foulard may be hand washed and hung dry, or dry-clean for best results. You may steam out the wrinkles prior to the performance.
• Repurpose your retired foulard as table toppers for prop tables or the floating table. You can cut a small hole in a double-sided foulard for the gimmick.
